Emerge-A Child’s Place is pleased to offer:

The SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) Approach to Eating

It is often challenging for everyone in the family when a child has eating issues.  Many parents are frustrated and concerned when their child eats a very limited diet and is resistant to exploring or accepting any new foods.  Some children become increasingly restrictive in their food choices, often become very specific about what brand of a particular food they will eat.  Limitations in food acceptance are often related to the taste, texture, odor or appearance of the food.

Emerge now offers both individual and small group therapy to address eating challenges.

The SOS approach allows a child to interact with food in a playful, non-stressful way.  It focuses on teaching a child the basic rules of eating through exploring different properties of foods, including texture, smell, taste and consistency.

Those who may benefit from this therapy include:

  • A child who has a limited variety of tastes and textures in diet.
  • A child who has difficulties transitioning to advanced textures.
  • A child who demonstrates food refusal.
  • A child who has maladaptive behaviors around eating.
  • Families who power struggle at meal times.
  • A child who is transitioning from tube to oral feeding.
  • A child who has a low volume of oral intake (or no oral intake).
  • A child who has poor weight gain.
